Poor Drainage?

 Creating Proper Drainage in a Floodplain

Managing water flow in a floodplain is crucial to prevent flooding and protect your property. Here are some effective methods for proper drainage:

1. Slope the Ground Away From the House:

   • Ensure that the ground around your house slopes away from the foundation.
   • Add soil to create a gentle slope, directing water away from the house.
   • Maintain a minimum of 4 inches between the slope and the bottom of the siding1.

2. Replace Hardscapes with Drainage Materials:

   • Concrete or asphalt surfaces can sometimes divert water toward the house.
   • Replace these hardscapes with crushed gravel or pea gravel to encourage even drainage1.

3. Install a Rain Barrel:

   • Collect rainwater from downspouts using a rain barrel.
   • Reconfigure downspouts to direct water into the barrel for later use in gardens1.

4. Add a Channel Drain:

You Have Black Soil?

Black soil is a type of soil that is rich in organic matter, clay, and iron. It is also known as black earth, black loam, or chernozem. Black soil is good for growing crops such as wheat, cotton, sugarcane, and vegetables. However, black soil can also be heavy, sticky, and prone to waterlogging. I tried it different this year and made a planter, the way I saw on another website.  I have potatoes, and will follow up on the harvest later...

 

I had a few potato sprouts left so I planted them in this pot... just in case they wanted to do something.....and I had the extra pot........

Tomatoes Cukes Peas

Yes, it's finally that time, and I am really enjoying some of the fruits of my labor.........Cukes, peas, tomatoes and beets are all producing right now.  the leaf lettuce has gotten bitter and over grown, so I'll compost it.....but there's a new crop that's trying to survive the heat, here in Texas.  My okra, is on the verge of blooming and starting to make.  I'm so ready for a good mess of okra.  How about you?
Picked some peas this week, but didn't get many, since I didn't plant very many.  I'll save these and keep watering, cause I see new blooms, on the plants which means more peas.  I had to put some 7 dust on them for the aphids, that have started.  Darn pests always ruin a good garden.  It's almost grass hopper time as well and the I'll ready have a fight on my hands.

Tomatoes

 

Looking good, will have tomatoes in a few weeks.

Fresh Veggies

 

I'm sure you can recognize most of these plants.  Some I have been enjoying already.

Mango

 

Here is my mango tree, that I sprouted from seed back a few months ago.  It stayed in the house all winter, and has started to put on new leaves, since I fed it last week.  Am interested to see what this year's growth will yield.

Potatoes

I guess you could say, I'm proud of my potato plants, as they seem to be growing real well after the last rain.

Freeze

It's looking to have a freeze tonight in our local areas......so, I brought many of my plants inside, to protect them.........the others are covered, or under the front porch.  I hope that's good enough to keep them from freezing! :)

Rain Has Come Again

 

Back in May of this year, we experienced the onslaught of heavy rains, for about three days, straight.  We found many people stuck on the roads in high water.  The creek and river banks were gorged and overflowing, with possible ruptures of the local dams around the lakes.  Now, we are in the middle of the same situation, with the latest weather.

 

Today, it's again raining and has been since yesterday morning, with rain amounts in the 5, 6 & 7inch range in most areas of North Texas and over most of the State.  Looks as though the rain will stay here another day or so, since Hurricane Patricia has hit Mexico and traveling up the coast in our direction.  The outer  bands of the hurricane, will continue the upper level of moisture to be present in our areas.  

We are already floating, and there has been many motorists stranded needed rescue.  

The local construction areas have been affected with flooding as well, causing delays in commuter traffic the last 24 hours.
