You Have Black Soil?

Black soil is a type of soil that is rich in organic matter, clay, and iron. It is also known as black earth, black loam, or chernozem. Black soil is good for growing crops such as wheat, cotton, sugarcane, and vegetables. However, black soil can also be heavy, sticky, and prone to waterlogging. Therefore, it may need some amendments to improve its drainage, aeration, and fertility1 One way to amend black soil is to add a garden mix that contains ingredients such as sphagnum peat moss, perlite, coir, gypsum, limestone, wetting agent, and mycorrhizae. These ingredients can help loosen the soil, increase its water retention and porosity, adjust its pH, and enhance its microbial activity. Potatoes

 

I tried it different this year and made a planter, the way I saw on another website.  I have potatoes, and will follow up on the harvest later...

 

I had a few potato sprouts left so I planted them in this pot... just in case they wanted to do something.....and I had the extra pot........

Green House?

Done right, gardening can be one of the most satisfying hobbies you can ever have. It’s one of the best ways to interact with your earthly roots.  A basic greenhouse can function without having any electricity, but its scope can be greatly improved if you install a well functioning electrical system to it. This is definitely the case if you have any plans to grow tropical plants within your greenhouse. Veggie Garden

 

Here's another view of my cukes, peas, and tomatoes.

 

And here you see marigolds, beets, squash plants, leaf lettuce, and one left over collard green plant from last year.

On the other side of the fence, you see my cow peas.  On this side you see my beets, a squash plant and some marigolds.

 

Along with the peas, you can see my tomato plants, in cages.

Tomatoes

 

Looking good, will have tomatoes in a few weeks.

Cukes Starting to Produce

 

Just a couple more days and these babies will be on my plate! :)

Fresh Veggies

 

I'm sure you can recognize most of these plants.  Some I have been enjoying already.

 

Got to support the tomatoes, cow peas and cukes.........onions mixed in around them.

Blooming tomatoes, and on the left underneath the tomato leaf, Kolrabi is growing......first time to try this one..... :)

3 Weeks Ago

 The bigger plant is one left over from last year, collards and on the right is my beet plants.

 

Top left are my potato plants and the light green is leaf lettuce.  Also, at the top of this picture on the right are radishes.

And here are two bunches of onion slips, that I purchased from the store and set out.

Lettuce

 

My leaf lettuce is coming on, good and the one darker plant with them, is probably marigolds, that I scattered the same day I planted the lettuce.  I hope the marigolds make good plants this year, so the bugs will go somewhere else.

Supports

This type of support folds up when it's time for storage.  Much easier to handle that the stiff tomato cages.

Planting

Onions, potatoes, lettuce, beets and radishes, are planted as of today...........Had to spray the ground outside of it, because I noticed cats and etc. have been going to the bathroom in it.........so, I'll have to keep a good watch on it, to keep them out.........will be spraying repellent ever so often.
I have plenty of other seeds to plant but, will need to wait until frost season goes away............and so the fun begins.........can't wait to see how well it does this year.......got some extra potting soil worked in to help with the soil texture.  Last year, it was too sandy and bombed out..........lost most of my plants............we will see how it goes.
Had a good rain this week, so maybe the potatoes will take to sprouting and make good harvest.  Love fresh veggies out of a garden..........home grown is the best!

Mango Plant

About 6 months ago, I cleaned a mango, that I had recently bought at a local grocery.  I let it set for a few days, and then cut it open, cleaned the meat and peel from the seed, and placed it on the window seal, to dry.  About a week later, I noticed a place on the side of the seed that had popped open, from drying.  I removed the inside from the dry hard outer shell.
I took the inside seed, and place it in some water, which I changed daily for about 4 days.  By that time it had started to grow a small root from the sloped end.  After another week, I removed it from the water and placed in in the pot here in the picture in some potting soil.  Covering only the root portion and loosely covering part of the rest of the seed, leaving most of it exposed. 
Here, you see my plant growing and now, I will need to keep it in a warm bright area.
